Get ready to celebrate National Ice Cream Day on July 21st! While Nebraska may not be known for its dairy exports, the state proudly supports a robust dairy industry. With nearly 550 licensed dairies producing a staggering 1.3 billion pounds of milk annually, Nebraska is a key player in the dairy world. Spread across the state are ten processing plants dedicated to milk bottling, cheese making, creameries, ice cream manufacturing, and drying facilities.
One of the most delightful ways to enjoy #NationalIceCreamDay is by crafting your own ice cream at home. Gather the whole family and whip up this easy ice cream-in-a-bag recipe.
What you need
- 1/2 Cup Milk: You can use any variety of milk for this recipe, even dairy free.
- 1 Tbsp Granulated Sugar: Adds the right amount of sweetness.
- 1/4 Tsp Vanilla Extract: This recipe uses vanilla extract for classic vanilla ice cream, but feel free to get creative! Swap it out for peppermint, strawberry, or any flavor you desire.
- 6 Tbsp Salt
- 2 Quart Size Ziplock Bags
- 1 Gallon Size Ziplock Bag
- Ice
How to make it
- Step 1: Mix milk, sugar, and vanilla in a gallon size Ziploc bag. Mix up the ingredients to help dissolve the sugar. Seal the bag well, making sure to remove as much air as you can.
- Step 2: Add the ice and salt into the quart size Ziploc bag. It should be about half-full of ice so there is room for the bag of ice cream mixture to go inside as well. Add the first bag and seal the outer bag, pressing out as much air as possible.
- Step 3: Shake the bag for 5-15 minutes. Get the whole family involved and play a game of “hot potato!” Be careful not to squeeze the bag too hard.
- Step 4: Scoop out and enjoy!
